Aren't they just so adorable!?! Poor mama hen: we like to go peek on the babies all the time and she is still not all that happy about it.
Looks like there are still some unhatched eggs under her - I'm guessing they're all white ones. Those silver leghorns... let's just say they won't engage in any funny business with the rooster!

ReplyDeleteHello Aimee,
ReplyDeleteIs that the blood momma or a surrogate? What breed is the rooster? Wondering why you think they are the silver leghorns. The picture would imply mixed breed if she is the momma.
Hi Perry,
ReplyDeleteThe father is a silver leghorn. Our hens are silver leghorn, americauna, cucko maran, and rhode island red. All the chickens laid in the nest box, including the mama hen. So she's kind of surrogate/real mom. I'm sure some of the eggs in there might have been hers - no way to tell really.
Also, as much as the silver leghorns don't seem to get "caught" by the rooster, there was evidence of two or three silver leghorn chicks. I think they must eat most of the eggs. When mama cleared out of the next there were some scraps of white, green, and brown eggs - and 7 "dud" eggs (4 of them white).
